What a beautiful day for a hike! I spend a great deal of time talking about amateur radio in my day to day life. It is no surprise that I get many questions from non-hams about the hobby and how it works. Recently I decided to host a monthly “nerd hike” where I invite friends to join me for a SOTA activation and see what all the buzz is about!

This outing, I was joined by Edward KO6DVZ, Mark K3MGM, and three curious friends Luiza, Violetta, and Pamela!

The ‘hike’ to Flint Peak is mild, but offers some great views of Los Angeles on the ascent. On the walk to the summit I explained to our guests about a typical SOTA exchange involving a signal report and possibly a maidenhead grid square. I really enjoy teaching others about amateur radio!

When we hit the summit, there is a nice landing north of the tower site that served as our activation location. While Mark and Edward set up an HF station, I quickly deployed my ICOM IC-705 to begin working 2m SSB.

I gave our guests the opportunity to work the radio and log contacts. It was important to me that this be a hands on experience for guests vs just sitting on the sideline and observing. Based on the smiles, I think everyone had fun!

HF conditions weren’t amazing, but we did make some longer distance contacts on HF / CW. Our longest contact was with VE7JCF in BC Canada, 1,036 Miles!

After the activation, we stopped by a local cafe for a smoothie and great conversation. Big thanks to Mark K3MGM and Edward KO6DVZ for help making this event a success!

Here is a short video of some of the action!
