What a beautiful day for a hike! I drove in a little early to Carlsbad CA before a business meeting I was attending. This summit popped up as near the hotel so I decided to go check it out.

Parking was easy in a residential neighborhood, with a clear trailhead split between two houses. There was a ham with plenty of antennas a few doors south of the trailhead (see pic).

The initial climb was a bit steep, but leveled off once I got to the ridge line. I had a snack and hydrated before setting up. This would be my first activation with my new 2m bandpass filter, the Tiny Filter by N6ARA and K6STR. It was neat to get Mike K6STR in the log on this activation using his filter design. Thanks again Mike!

As I was packing up to head out, I flipped up to 146.580 to see if there was any activity there. That’s where I found KO6IHG calling CQ SOTA. He indicated it was his first time activating, and that he was on Mt Helix. I’ve looked at that summit before, it’s a drive up. Sadly, there was a station all the way up in Los Angeles that was rag chewing on frequency and trashing all over the new activator. He clearly could’t hear any of the QRP stations activating, but we could definitely hear him! Public service announcement: Please don’t rag chew on 146.580
